I just returned from a follow-up with the Doc. Encouraging words, that I'm trying to recall from memory:
He snipped the stitches off and dabbled some benzine or something around it. He then taped two strips over it horizontally and said I'd be surprised how well that tape sticks. Apparently the benzine or whatever helps it stick better. It's okay if it comes off after a couple of days, because it's already pretty much healed.
They were going to give me bunion splint to keep the toe straight, but I asked how much it was, $15. I asked to see the Doc again and explained how I don't have insurance, so is there another way to do this. He got some cool tape called Coban or Co-Flex that sticks to itself. He wrapped it strategically around the fore foot and toes the way the bunion splint had been. That didn't quite keep it aligned because there was no metal helping the toe be straight. So he tried it again, this time wrapping it more around all of the toes, and now the toes are straight!
Moreover, after I came home I found the splint-type thing I had used before, to keep the toe from flexing upward, and wrapped it around the toes with the Coban tape. The Doc gave me two rolls for free. (One of them is hot pink!)
I want to go swimming tonight. I might wait until tomorrow morning. Tonight also I want to go to Notsuoh and check out their life drawing workshop. I haven't seen those folks in a while. I might swim before I go. Woohoo! I doubt I'll model, but who knows. Maybe I can arrange to model just my legs and we can all draw them, including me. I won't be able to stand anyway.
